history and evolution

The comp.speech newsgroup has been in existence for over 5 years. Within the last year, speech recognition applications have become very popular as hundreds of thousands of users begin to explore speech recognition technology.

comp.speech was originally created to discuss the technical issues of research & development of such systems. However, the comp.speech newsgroup has been overwhelmed by the amount of actual users discussing issues related to everyday use of the technology.

On June 9, 1998, it was announced that comp.speech split up into 2 charters. comp.speech.users and comp.speech.research. comp.speech.users will mainly discuss the everyday use of the speech technology while comp.speech.research will discuss issues relating to research and development of such systems.
